In some cases, you actually don't need to download and install an old version of iMovie. But sometimes, the old version is the only solution. This article will share with you where to download an old version of iMovie safely if necessary.

Before downloading the standalone dmg file of iMovie, you should try to upgrade iMovie to the last compatible version automatically on Mac's App Store. This will work if you have or ever have had iMovie 10 on your Mac. Here is how: drag your iMovie 10 app from the Applications folder into the Trash, but do not empty the Trash. Then launch your App Store, login your account, open your purchases folder by clicking on your name at the bottom of the app store side bar, then find iMovie and try to redownload iMovie to your Mac. If the following dialogue appears, click Download to start installing the last compatible version of iMovie to your Mac. If not successful, drag your present iMovie app back to the Applications folder.

If iMovie isn't in your purchase history, there may be a little trick you can use, if you can just get temporary access to a newer Mac with the new macOS. Log into the App Store with your Apple ID and "purchase" iMovie there. Now back to your old Mac to check your purchase history, and you can download the older version of iMovie for your old Mac. If you can't access another Mac, you could also try Virtual Machines (installed another macOS with the help of Parallels Desktop, VMware Fusion or VirtualBox) to install a copy of macOS to buy the iMovie app, then download the older version of iMovie from the App Store on your Mac.

App Store for Mac is the right place to download iMovie. However, it doesn't work sometimes. If so, you would need to visit somewhere on the internet to download an old version of iMovie. Well-know websites are preferred. But these sites are unauthorized by Apple, so be careful because the downloaded files might carry malware. Don't forget to turn on your firewall and malware fighter. Below are websites you could download old versions of iMovie from non-Apple sites. For iMovie torrent file, you need a torrent client like BitTorrent to download iMovie dmg file for installing on Mac.

For more iMovie earlier versions, please google "iMovie old versions" to find a place to download the iMovie installation package. If you're using Windows, an iMovie for Windows alternative is what you need.

I have a mid 2009 MacBook Pro which is only compatible with El Capitan, evidently. I need to download iMovie but the app store is telling me that the current iMovie, which it wants to download by default, is not compatible with my OS. Where can I download the latest version of iMovie which is compatible with El Capitan? Thank you

1. You can download iMovie 9.0.9 and from there upgrade to iMovie 10 from the App store, and you should get the latest version of iMovie that will run on El Capitan. You can download iMovie 9.0.9 at this link:

2. Another possibility requires your friend's cooperation. Again, I don't know if it will work. If he/she will put his version of iMovie in the trash, but not empty the trash, and then, on your computer, sign into the App store with his/her applie ID , then you can try to download iMovie onto your computer. Afterwards your friend can remove from the trash her/her iMovie folder and replace it in the Applications folder.

Sorry. I meant what version of iMovie is currently on your Mac. Or do you not have iMovie at all? If you had previously downloaded an older version of iMovie then the download prompt that you receive from the App store would include a note that you can download the "latest compatible" iMovie version that will run on your operating system. Since you didn't receive that prompt you probably don't have an iMovie version -- is that right?

Thank you for your Speedy reply. I do not have iMovie on my computer at all. I wanted to download it. Yes I just got this computer from a friend of mine. Sure wish I could afford a new one but I can't because I served in the military twice, was injured on active duty and the VA it's basically turned their back on me for a couple decades.

I just recently upgraded to macOS Mojave with a clean installation through the recovery mode and started downloading already purchased apps like pages, keynote, garage band and so on. All other apps got downloaded just fine except iMovie. The download progresses to 20 Mb and immediately resets to 10.5 MB and the cycle continues, and after a while the download self terminates with no message.

Edit: I reverted back to OSX Yosemite, through the recovery mode, downloaded the compatible version of iMovie there (10.1.1) (latest version isn't compatible with Yosemite) upgraded to Mojave and tried updating iMovie to 10.1.9, however, the problem still persists. Yet, I do have the old version of iMovie which works for me. I don't know if the problem is compatibility with my Mac or something else.
